Who publishes this website

MLS Calculator is published and maintained by MoneyToolkit, an independent Australian publisher of practical financial calculators and plain-English guides.

MoneyToolkit is responsible for the calculators, editorial content, updates, and corrections on this site. We use a publisher identity so the work is accountable without requiring an individual contributor to make their personal identity public.

We are not affiliated with the ATO, Department of Health, a health fund, insurance broker, comparison service, or financial adviser. Advertising does not influence results or editorial conclusions.

What we build

The site includes the main MLS estimator plus family, reverse-threshold, partial-year, optimisation, salary-sacrifice, Lifetime Health Cover, and year-comparison calculators.

They are designed for individuals and families comparing a possible surcharge with the cost and coverage of private hospital insurance.

Useful before precise

Our tools help Australians estimate the Medicare levy surcharge and understand how income for MLS purposes, family thresholds, hospital cover, and partial-year rules affect it.

Sources you can inspect

We prioritise ATO guidance and thresholds, Commonwealth health and tax legislation, Department of Health material, and official private-health-insurance rules.

Reviewed when inputs change

We prioritise review when MLS thresholds, tax or health-insurance rules, official guidance, or calculator logic changes.

Private by design

Calculator inputs are processed in your browser. You can use the tools without creating an account or sending the values you enter to us.

How to assess our work

Read the calculator methodology for the model, assumptions, and sources, and the editorial policy for our sourcing, review, and independence standards. If something appears wrong or out of date, the corrections policy explains how to report it.

Important limitation

An actual surcharge depends on tax-return amounts, spouse and dependant circumstances, eligible hospital-cover dates, and policy details. Insurance cost comparisons are general and do not assess whether a policy suits you.
